It's not something we talk about

It’s not something we talk about…it’s personal…

Truth be known, I even feel hesitant writing about it, however I’m going to push through and do it anyway.

What’s personal? Why am I hesitating? Because it’s about money.

There I’ve said it…that wasn’t so bad, the roof hasn’t fallen in…I’m still here…

The irony is…none of us would get very far without it…so why the secrecy?

An ingenious idea…

It drives us from the moment we wake up, until lights out…not much happens unless there’s an exchange of it.

We turn on the lights, it costs…ka ching. We flush the toilet, yup…ka-ching. We make coffee…ka-ching. We catch a bus…ka-ching.

That ka-ching rings out in tandem with almost everything we do…we’re always using someone’s product or service, and that comes with, yup…a ka-Ching.

It also dictates what we do eight hours a day, five days a week…give or take…in the process of earning it.

It’s a very ingenious idea…up there with the wheel, the Internet…it’s the basis of our value system…and yet it spends most of its time under the radar…because it’s personal.

We even have access to knowledge that allows us to make more of the stuff than ever before.

That’s a secret…

As to how much we have, that’s a secret…however, we do leave a trail of ‘tell-tail’ signs…where we work, what we do, where we live, what car we drive, the clothes we wear…

Although what we wear today has fewer outward signs of our financial status than it used to...

Our relationship to money is unique…yet there is a common thread…most of us want more of it…we don’t speak of it in those terms exactly, excusing our desire with an off-hand comment like, “Who doesn’t want more money?”

The Sharing Economy…

We need it to feed ourselves, providing shelter...a sense of wellbeing…

It’s an enabler…it makes us feel important, provides stability…in short its key to a sustainable life…

…and yet we shy away from talking about it…raising our guard…

Is it because money can be used as a measure of our worth…our value...is that what makes it so personal…because it’s about us…who we are, what we represent…

I think about money as a measure of the value I bring to others…

If we focus on giving…the other side of the equation will take care of itself…

As we’re well into the Sharing Economy, where the emphasis is on ‘we’, I’m not going to feel in the least bit uncomfortable talking about it anymore.

…ka-ching.
